Do You Need a Trust?
You’ve probably heard someone say:
“You need to put everything in a trust.”
Okay…
But what does that actually mean? 😂
Let’s make it simple.
First: What Is a Trust?
A trust is a legal arrangement in which assets are held and managed according to specific instructions for designated beneficiaries.
"What is an asset, you ask?"
🏠 Home or property
🚗 Vehicles
💰 Checking & savings accounts
📈 Investments & retirement accounts
🏢 Business ownership
💎 Jewelry & valuables
🪑 Personal belongings
There are different kinds of trusts, and they don’t all work the same way.
So, the better question isn’t:
“Does everyone need a trust?”
It’s:
“Would a trust help accomplish what I want to happen with my assets?”
Let’s find out.
Which One Sounds Like You?
I want to control more than WHO receives something. I also care about WHEN or HOW they receive it.
○ That’s me
○ Not really
○ I never thought about that.
Here’s an example:
Suppose you’re leaving money to your child.
Would you want them receiving the entire amount immediately?
Or would you prefer instructions such as money being available for certain purposes or distributed over time?
That’s the kind of question that makes trusts worth understanding.
Here’s Another One
Imagine you’ve spent years building assets.
Maybe you own:
🏠 A home
💰 Savings or investments
🏢 A business
🚗 Property
📈 Other financial assets
Now finish this sentence:
“When I’m gone, I want what I’ve built to __________.”
Go to my children?
Continue supporting my family?
Help fund someone’s education?
Support an organization?
Stay protected and managed for someone who isn’t ready to manage it themselves?
That’s where legacy planning becomes personal.
Will vs. Trust
They’re not interchangeable, and one isn’t automatically “better.”
They are estate-planning tools that can accomplish different things.
What makes sense depends on your assets, family, goals, state law and the kind of control you’re trying to create.
So, Do You Need a Trust?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
And that’s okay.
The goal isn’t to collect financial and legal products because somebody on the internet told you that you need them.
The goal is to understand your options and create a plan that actually fits your life.
